If you don't expect personalised t-shirts to be worn right away, package them somehow.

A common mistake made with personalised t-shirts is that they are handed loosely to customers, even if it is not practical for the recipient to instantly put the shirt on. While the personalised t-shirts may have value, they then create a logistical challenge (i.e. another thing to have to carry around). A great way to avoid this, such as what you would commonly see at a trade show, is to offer personalised t-shirts and perhaps other promo items too in a tote bag of some sort. These bags don't need to be fancy, but they will offer a great way to transport personalised t-shirts without the recipient needing to wonder what they should do with this new item in their possession. This is an aspect of offering promo t-shirts that often goes unnoticed, but is one of which you should be aware.

The sooner a customer can wear your personalised t-shirts, the better.

It is common for personalised t-shirts to arrive to you in large boxes, and this often means that the personalised t-shirts will be folded, or otherwise wrinkled in a manner that will render them less easy to wear. This can be a disadvantage for you, because the more opportunities your promo t-shirt recipients have to think twice about wearing your promo t-shirts, the less likely it is that they will ever wear them. Promo t-shirts that are wadded or folded into barely recognizable bundles will not be seen as wearable, and that dramatically reduces their effectiveness. If you actually want your personalised t-shirts to be worn, and worn quickly, it is a good idea to perform a bulk wash of the promo t-shirts you get, so they can be offered flat and in a ready to wear format more pleasing to your customers.

Make personalised t-shirts more of an exclusive offering to give them more value.

If you elect to offer personalised t-shirts to everyone who wants them, it can help you play the numbers game, but it may also diminish the perceived value of the shirts. When personalised t-shirts are seen as having less value, they do not get worn, and this does nothing to really help your business. When you instead offer personalised t-shirts as a goal (i.e. something a recipient will receive once they've done something), then they are instantly moved to a higher quality plateau. Because a customer has to do something (even if it's the simplest of actions) to earn a personalised t-shirt, it will be seen as a more exclusive and higher value item. You may end up distributing a similar quantity of shirts by doing this, and the ones you do ned out there will give you a lot more benefits in return.

Keep your verbiage on personalised t-shirts to a minimum.

One mistake made when designing personalised t-shirts is to try and put too much information on them. They are not walking billboards, unlike what may be thought of personalised t-shirts by some. Understand that the value in personalised t-shirts is twofold. First, the person receiving the personalised t-shirt will see value in the fact that you gave them something for free. Second, the personalised t-shirts ideally share a message that other people will see when they encounter the person wearing the shirt. It is for this second benefit that your brevity is important, because your promo t-shirts may have the attention of passers by for about 5 seconds, before they shift attention to something or someone else. If they can't read the contents of your personalised t-shirts in that time, they'll lose interest.
