How can you hook customers with your brand and increase leads with personalised items?

In 2002, LSU students conducted research during an exposition of electronic items in Louisiana. The research showed consumers respond positively to free personalised items.

The Promo Research Set-up

A company established a booth in the expo to distribute free personalised items. Considering the event was an exposition of electronic items, they gave out personalised USB devices. At least 2,389 consumers approached and acquired the promo items. Then, the researchers asked why the people took the product.

 

  • 65% of consumers who took the promo products thought it was useful
  • 26% of consumers who took the marketing products thought it was attractive
  • 9% of consumers who took the promotional products thought it was a collectible

 

Another set of questions were asked from the 65% of consumers who thought the promo product was useful. The questions regarded the possible use and application of the product.

 

  • 67% would use the promo product in the workplace
  • 20% would use the promo product in school
  • 13% would use the promo product at home

 

Product relevance should be considered when developing personalised items. The promotional items should be customised for the task or purpose of the consumer. Relevant promotional products that are used continually allow the advertising company to gain recognition through brand recall. This will generate leads and inquisitions among consumers in the long term. Long term recall is known to enhance customer loyalty. This allows the advertising company to gain a higher perceived value.

Another Relavant Promo Survey

In 2001, the Exhibit Surveys Inc. conducted a study regarding the effect of personalised items on consumer loyalty. The subjects involved with the study included 120 office workers. During the initial phase of the study, the workers were not aware that a study was being conducted.

 

The workers were regularly given customised items including custom branded pens, logoed papers, and other personalised office materials. The customised items contained a local computer store's company logo. After one year, the study was revealed, and a survey was conducted regarding the workers' purchases.      

 

  • 57% of the workers bought an electronic item from the computer store provided that the store offered customised items along with the purchase.
  • 21% of the workers bought an item from the store due to reasons not related to the customised items.
  •  More than half of the workers bought from the store due to customised items. 

The Promo Item Research Summary


Use personalised merchandise and gifts to entice customers. They promote continuous brand exposure, and that is one of the most important factors in increasing leads. In the Exhibit Surveys, Inc. research, familiarity had been developed by the exposure to the brand logo on the promo office items people used. The workers bought a product from the store they recognised. Customer loyalty can be established through the continual use of customised items.
